Keep it cool this summer. I’m Laurie Edwards-Tate with “LifeCycles.”

Nearly 400 deaths occur in the U.S. every year due to heat strokes, half to people older than 65. High blood pressure and diabetes increase the risk. This is a preventable tragedy.

Once temperatures reach 90 degrees and humidity is 35 percent, older adults should take precautions. Drink more water than usual.  Eat light meals that do not need cooking.  Take a cool shower or bath.  Rest in a cooler area.

The County of San Diego’s Designated Cool Zones provide relief during hot days. To find one near you, call 800-510-2020.

If you suspect symptoms of heatstroke, do NOT WAIT! Call 9-1-1 immediately.
