We worry about substance abuse by teens, but we should also worry about drug and alcohol use by seniors.
Nearly one in five people over 60 has a substance abuse problem. Many self-medicate as a way to cope with chronic pain or loneliness.
But it’s a bad idea. Alcohol is a depressive and it will depress you even more. Alcohol and drugs can interfere with prescription medications for common conditions. Substance abuse by seniors increases the risk of suicide.
Limit alcohol consumption if you’re older. Monitor drinking by older family and friends. Don’t be afraid to get help.
