A Torch to Light the Way: Reflections on Ethical Leadership in Business

By Laurie Edwards-Tate, MS

Winning the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award for Ethics is more than just a proud moment for At Your Home Family care. It represents four decades of staying true to our values while caring for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities throughout San Diego County. In home care, families place extraordinary trust in the people who enter their homes — trust that cannot be bought or faked. It is earned, over and over again, through honesty, compassion, and accountability.

For me, this award is not only a reflection of what our company has accomplished, but also a challenge to keep raising the bar. It reminds me that leadership is not measured only by financial results or business growth. True leadership is measured by how faithfully we honor commitments, how consistently we treat people with dignity, and how willingly we choose the harder right over the easier wrong.

Lessons from the Journey

Reflecting on this recognition, several lessons stand out for business owners and leaders:

  1. Ethics Begin with People.
More than half of our employees have been with At Your Home Familycare for over five years. In a high-turnover industry, that is extraordinary. The reason? We treat our caregivers with dignity, provide them with meaningful training, and listen to their voices. When employees feel valued, they deliver care rooted in compassion and consistency.
  2. Transparency Builds Trust.
Whether with employees, clients, or community partners, honesty and clarity are non-negotiable. We’ve learned that difficult conversations handled with openness are far better than silence or half-truths. Transparency may feel uncomfortable in the moment, but it creates long-term confidence in your leadership.
  3. Consistency is a Leadership Practice.
Ethics are not situational. A company cannot trumpet integrity when it’s convenient and abandon it when profits are on the line. Upholding ethical standards requires consistency — day in and day out — even when it is costly or difficult.

Advice for Business Owners

For leaders striving to weave ethics into the fabric of their operations, here are a few practical steps:

  • Hire and Retain with Values in Mind. Don’t just look for technical skills. Seek out employees whose character aligns with your organization’s mission. Support their growth and celebrate their loyalty.
  • Create Systems for Accountability. Ethical practices don’t happen by accident. Build in policies, training, and oversight that make ethics part of your workflow — not an afterthought.
  • Lead by Example. Employees notice how leaders act when no one is watching. Demonstrating fairness, honesty, and humility sets the tone for the entire organization.
  • Prioritize Long-Term Relationships Over Short-Term Gains. The businesses that last are those that put people first — customers, employees, and community alike.

Carrying the Torch Forward

The Torch Award is both recognition and responsibility. Recognition that At Your Home Family care has built a culture where ethics are woven into every decision. Responsibility to keep that flame burning, to prove that doing the right thing is not only possible, but essential for long-term success.

Ethical leadership may not always be the easiest path. It requires patience, discipline, and a willingness to say “no” when others might say “yes.” But it is the path that creates resilient organizations, loyal employees, and strong communities.

As we carry this torch forward, my hope is that other business owners see that ethics are not a side conversation — they are the very heart of business. When you commit to leading with integrity, you light the way not only for your company, but for the people and communities you serve. That is the true reward.
